Rani ghat is located next to the Rajghat and was a part of it in early days. Just like the Rajghat it holds no religious importance and is one of the least popular ghats in Varanasi. In 1937 a queen of Lucknow, Muniya Sahiba built a grand house on the ghat and gradually people started calling it Rani Ghat. In 1988-99 Govt converted this ghat into a pucca ghat.
Today, The Rani Ghat looks beautiful with the colourful clothes drying all around the stairs. It is one of the many sites where washermen and women wash clothes(Which is an illegal activity). Most of the tourists who traverse through the ghat or see it from the boat mark it as the “cutest” ghat in Varanasi.
Rani Ghat gained a lot of media attention when the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt performed the last rites of his father and veteran actor Late. Sunil Dutt on this ghat. Since then it has seen a rise in footfall.
