Dev Diwali with Senior Citizens: Safe, Easy Plan (2026)

Dev Diwali is one of the most beautiful nights you can give your parents or grandparents, and one of the most tiring if it is not planned. Millions of diyas, a packed Ganga Aarti and ghats full of people look wonderful from a boat. On foot, they are hard on knees, hearts and patience. This guide shows how to do Dev Diwali 2026 (Tuesday, 24 November) comfortably with senior citizens.

The short answer

Watch Dev Diwali from a pre-booked boat, not from the ghats. A boat gives your parents a seat for the whole evening, a clear view of the diyas and the Ganga Aarti, and an exit from the crowd. Report early, board early, sit down, and let the evening come to you. You can compare and book Dev Diwali boats here.

Why the ghats are hard for seniors on Dev Diwali

  • Crowds. Walking lanes near Dashashwamedh and Assi fill up from the afternoon. Standing or being pushed is the main risk for older visitors. See how crowded Dev Diwali gets before you plan.
  • Steps. Varanasi ghats are long flights of stone steps, often uneven and damp near the water. There are no ramps on most ghats.
  • Waiting. Roads near the ghats are restricted on the evening, so the last stretch is usually on foot.
  • Cold evening. Late November evenings on the river are cool, and wind on the water makes it feel colder.

Which boat suits senior citizens

For most families, comfort comes down to three things: a proper seat, space to move, and fewer people around. Our guide to boat types on Dev Diwali explains each option. In short:

  • Private Family Boat: best for a family with elders. Your group only, your own pace, no strangers. Ask for it early, as numbers are limited. See the Private Family Boat.
  • Close Circle and Shared Vibe: small-group boats at ₹4,999 and ₹4,499 per person. Good if you want comfort without paying for a full private boat.
  • Bajra Sky Deck and Maharaja VIP: larger decked boats from ₹8,999 per person. More space and a more premium evening, but check seating and the stairs between decks with your grandparents in mind.
  • Celebration Boat (from ₹3,999): the budget option. It is a lively shared boat, so it suits active seniors better than anyone who needs quiet.

Practical plan for the day (24 November)

  1. Morning and afternoon: rest. Keep the day free. Skip long temple queues. A slow breakfast, a rest at the hotel and light food is enough.
  2. Stay close to Gaay Ghat. A hotel within a short ride of the boarding point saves the hardest walk of the day.
  3. Reporting time 4:00 PM at Gaay Ghat. The boat starts around 5:00 PM, near sunset. Arriving early means you walk the ghat before the main rush and settle in comfortably.
  4. Board with help. Boarding is over a short plank from the ghat steps. Tell the boatman about walking difficulty so someone gives an arm. Use a walking stick with a rubber tip.
  5. Eat before you board. A light meal before 4:00 PM avoids searching for food in the crowd.
  6. Return. The boat comes back to the ghat around 9:00 PM. Stay seated until the boat is tied up, then walk out slowly, not with the first rush.

What to carry for elders

  • A shawl or light jacket, a cap and socks. It gets cold on the river.
  • Regular medicines, plus water and a small snack. Keep a simple note with names and phone numbers in a pocket.
  • A thin cushion. Boat seats are firm.
  • Spectacles, a walking stick and a torch or phone light for steps.
  • Slip-resistant footwear. Leave slippers and open sandals at the hotel.

Health and safety tips

  • Check with your family doctor before travelling if a senior has a heart, breathing or blood pressure condition.
  • Agree on a meeting point and keep one family member with the senior at all times.
  • Every boat should carry life jackets for all passengers, including elders. Ask for them to be given before departure.
  • If a senior feels dizzy or breathless, tell the boatman at once and sit down. Do not wait for the Aarti to end.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dev Diwali suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, if they watch it from a booked boat. The ghats are crowded and have many steps, which is the hard part. A boat gives a seat and a clear view for the whole evening.

Which boat is best for elderly people on Dev Diwali?

A Private Family Boat is the most comfortable because only your group is on board. Small-group boats such as Close Circle and Shared Vibe are a good middle option.

How early should we reach Gaay Ghat?

Report by 4:00 PM. The boat starts around 5:00 PM. Reaching early avoids the evening rush on the steps.

Can a wheelchair user go on a Dev Diwali boat?

Most ghats have steps and no ramps, so a wheelchair cannot reach the water on its own. Message us before booking and we will tell you what help can be arranged at Gaay Ghat for your boat.

When should we book?

As early as possible. Boats and the better seats sell out well before 24 November. Check availability and book here.
