How Crowded Is Dev Diwali in Varanasi?

Dev Diwali draws huge crowds to Varanasi's main ghats. Here's what actually gets restricted, when it gets bad, and how to see everything without fighting the crush.

Yes, It Gets Very Crowded

Dev Diwali is one of Varanasi's biggest nights of the year. Tens of thousands of visitors from across India converge on the ghats to see all 84 of them lit with diyas, alongside the Ganga Aarti, laser show and fireworks. If you're planning to watch from land at one of the main ghats, you should plan around real crowding, not a quiet festival evening.

The crowding isn't spread evenly. A handful of ghats take almost all of it, while the river itself stays open and far less congested. That is why many visitors book a Dev Diwali boat instead.

Where It Gets Restricted

On past Dev Deepawali nights, traffic and access restrictions have concentrated around Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Godowlia crossing, and the Assi Ghat stretch. These areas typically become pedestrian-only several hours before the Aarti, with vehicles diverted well outside the old city. Dashashwamedh in particular can be barricaded during the Aarti itself, with movement tightly restricted in and around it.

Restrictions usually start building from around 4:00 PM, which is also when road access into the ghat area gets noticeably harder even for pedestrians. Arriving by 2:00-3:00 PM is the commonly recommended window if you intend to watch from a ghat on foot.

Exact 2026 traffic and barricading orders are issued by Varanasi Police closer to the date - the pattern above reflects recent years' plans, not a confirmed 2026 order.

Ghat-by-Ghat: What to Expect

Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi's main Ganga Aarti ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat

The single most crowded spot on the riverfront. Expect barricades, restricted movement, and very little room during the Aarti itself.

Assi Ghat in Varanasi, one of the main Aarti sites

Assi Ghat

Also heavily crowded, being one of the other major Aarti sites, though slightly more spread out than Dashashwamedh.

Godowlia crossing

Not a viewing spot itself, but the main approach road to Dashashwamedh - typically closed to vehicles and jammed with foot traffic from mid-afternoon.

Guests boarding a Varanasi Guru boat for Dev Diwali

Gaay Ghat (our boarding point)

Away from the main ceremony ghats, so it has no road closures and no VIP movement restrictions on Dev Diwali night - you reach your boat without the crowd or traffic that builds up elsewhere.

Why a Boat Ride Sidesteps the Crowd Entirely

Watching from the river removes the two things that make land viewing hard: you're not competing for a fixed spot on a packed ghat, and you're not walking through barricaded streets to get there. Once you're on the water, all 84 ghats, the Aarti, the laser show and the fireworks are visible from a moving vantage point, with no crowd to push through for a better view.

Boarding matters as much as the ride itself. We board from Gaay Ghat, away from the Dashashwamedh/Assi/Godowlia restriction zone, so you're not walking your group through the busiest part of the city just to reach your boat.

Crowd & Timing FAQs

Is Dev Diwali very crowded in Varanasi?

Yes. Tens of thousands of visitors come to Varanasi for Dev Diwali, and the main ghats (Dashashwamedh and Assi in particular) get very congested, with barricades and restricted movement during the Aarti.

What time should I arrive to watch from a ghat?

If watching from land, arrive by 2:00-3:00 PM. Restrictions and pedestrian-only zones typically build from around 4:00 PM onward.

Are roads closed on Dev Diwali night?

Yes, in past years the roads around Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Godowlia crossing, and the Assi Ghat stretch have been closed to vehicles and made pedestrian-only for several hours before the Aarti. Exact 2026 closures are set by Varanasi Police closer to the date.

Is a boat ride less crowded than watching from a ghat?

Yes. A boat ride avoids barricaded streets and packed ghats entirely - you see the illuminated riverfront, Aarti, laser show and fireworks from the water instead of competing for space on land.

Where do Varanasi Guru boats board from?

Gaay Ghat, which sits outside the main restriction zone around Dashashwamedh, Assi and Godowlia, so there are no road closures or VIP movement restrictions on the way to your boat.
