"This is the Varanasi nobody talks about - and it's the one you'll never forget"
I've done the ghat walks before. This was something else. The streets, the chai, the chaos - our guide made it all make sense. - Sophie L., Paris
Most visitors to Varanasi never leave the ghats. They see the river, the aarti, the burning pyres - and go home thinking they have seen the city. They haven't. The real Varanasi is in the lanes: the labyrinthine galis that wind behind the waterfront, through markets that haven't changed in centuries, past temples so old their origins are unknown.
The Raw Banaras Offbeat Heritage Walk is a 2.5-hour journey into that Varanasi. Beginning with kullhad chai at one of the oldest tea shops in the city, this walk takes you through the very streets used by funeral processions, up the Panchganga Ghat stairs trodden by saints, into the teeming microcosm of Pakka Mahal - and concludes at a hidden temple known to almost no outsider.
Street food and breakfast are included. So is a guide who grew up in these alleys and knows every shopkeeper, every shrine, every story. This is an opportunity to connect with the essence of Varanasi - not through its famous waterfront, but through the beating heart of the city behind it.
This is a sketch of the route, not the complete itinerary. We don't publish everything online to protect eco-sensitive and sacred spaces from overcrowding. Each walk is hand-crafted and tailored to your group's pace and interests.
Begin with a hot kullhad chai at one of Varanasi's oldest tea shops. Chai is not just a drink here - it is a shared ritual that crosses every social boundary in Banaras, enjoyed equally by priests, shopkeepers, and pilgrims. This aromatic start gives you time to connect with your Walk Guru before the adventure begins.
Traverse the labyrinthine old streets of Varanasi - the very paths used by funeral processions on their way to the sacred Manikarnika Ghat. Your expert guide, who has witnessed these rituals firsthand, explains their cultural and spiritual significance with sensitivity. Photography near cremation ceremonies is discouraged out of respect for local customs.
Leave the river behind and ascend the Panchganga Ghat stairs - a path trodden by Saint Kabir and countless revered figures through history. At the top, Varanasi transforms: the river town gives way to something far older and stranger. Your guide narrates the spiritual significance of this ascent as it unfolds beneath your feet.
Enter Pakka Mahal - a hidden quarter where the true microcosm of India unfolds. Bustling markets, ancient temples, and diverse communities exist in extraordinary proximity. Weavers, sweet-makers, sadhus, and street vendors - all within a few hundred metres. This is the Varanasi most visitors never find.
Indulge in the legendary Kachodi Sabzi - Varanasi's definitive breakfast dish, eaten by everyone from priests to politicians since dawn. Then follow the scent of marigolds to the flower market, pulsing with the needs of morning devotees heading to temples across the old city.
The walk concludes at a hidden temple known to almost no outsider - a gem of Varanasi's spiritual heritage, visited quietly by locals for generations. You leave not just with photos and memories, but with a deeper understanding of this ancient city's true essence.
All Varanasi Guru guides are trained specifically for walks designed and launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Uttar Pradesh Tourism. They grew up in these lanes. They know the shopkeepers, the priests, the weavers - and the stories that connect them all.
Walks are available in English and Hindi, and shaped around your interests - food, history, spirituality, photography, or all of the above. Every walk is different, because every guest is different.

Most walking tours stay on the main ghats. This walk goes into the streets, bazaars and ancient lanes behind the waterfront - areas most visitors never reach. You'll eat local street food, witness morning market life, and visit a hidden temple known to almost no outsider. It's Varanasi beyond the postcard.
The walk includes 2.5 hours with an expert heritage storyteller-guide, a fully private group experience (no strangers joined), kullhad chai at Lakshmi Chai Wala, Kachodi Sabzi breakfast, and access to all six stops including Manikarnika Ghat, Pakka Mahal, the morning flower market, and the hidden temple. Price is per person.
Early mornings are best - when the bazaars are waking up, the flower market is at its most vibrant, and the streets are at their most atmospheric before the day's crowds arrive. Exact timing is confirmed after booking based on the season and your preferences.
The walk is entirely private - just your group and your guide. We do not add strangers to existing groups. This allows the walk to be fully tailored to your pace, interests, and questions.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing covering shoulders and knees - modest dress is both respectful and practical. Bring comfortable shoes for uneven cobblestones, sunscreen, a hat, a water bottle, and a camera. Some cash for small spontaneous purchases can come in handy too.
Yes, and this walk offers outstanding photography opportunities - market life, ancient architecture, street portraits, and flower vendors at dawn. Please be mindful near the cremation ghat and always ask permission before photographing individuals. Your guide will advise on etiquette at every stop.
