For 31 nights each year, the entire town of Ramnagar becomes a stage for the Ramayana. Walk its lanes with a private storyteller as processions, village performances and centuries-old ritual bring the story of Ram to life around you.
The Ramnagar Ramleela is a living tradition that has continued for more than two centuries under the patronage of the Kashi Naresh, beginning in the early 1800s under Maharaja Udit Narayan Singh. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, it is performed entirely without loudspeakers or electric lights, by natural light and petromax lanterns, exactly as it has always been.
Rather than one stage, the whole town of Ramnagar becomes the set: streets, fields, temple courtyards and ghats each transform into a location from the Ramayana over the festival's 31 nights. Your storyteller guide walks you through it, not as a spectator watching from outside, but as someone who understands what each procession and performance actually means.

Three things that make Ramnagar's Ramleela unlike any other performance of the Ramayana in India.
Begun in the early 19th century by Maharaja Udit Narayan Singh, Kashi Naresh, and continued without interruption ever since, under the patronage of his successors to this day.
Recognised for its scale and continuity, one of the very few Ramleela performances anywhere in India staged across an entire town rather than a single venue.
Performed entirely without loudspeakers or electric lights, by natural light and petromax lanterns, the same way it has been staged for two centuries.
The Ramleela unfolds across the whole town, so your walk moves between several of its landmark locations over the course of the evening.
The historic gateway to the Kashi Naresh's fort, and a natural gathering point as the evening's processions begin to move through town.
One of the town's old shrines, its courtyard often doubling as a backdrop for the evening's performances.
A centuries-old tank central to several of the Ramleela's staged scenes, lit only by lantern light after dark.
The bustling crossroads and small neighbourhood shrines where the town's daily life and the festival's devotional performances overlap.

An evening cab ride takes you from your hotel across to Ramnagar as the festival grounds begin to fill.
Your storyteller sets the scene: which part of the Ramayana is being staged tonight, and where the evening's performances will move through town.
Stroll through Ramnagar's lanes, experiencing processions, music and devotional performances as they move across multiple locations in town.
Pass the historic fort gate and the old Durga Temple, two of the town's landmark stops along the route.
A stop for Ramnagar's own lassi and jalebi at a local sweet shop, a small tradition of its own during festival season.
Your cab brings you back across to your hotel as the evening winds down.
Ramnagar sits across the river from the city, so your cab transfer is included both ways.
Share your hotel name and preferred pickup time when booking. We'll confirm the exact evening departure time closer to your date, timed to the night's performance schedule.
It's a 31-day open-air festival that unfolds across the entire town of Ramnagar rather than one stage, transforming streets, fields, temple courtyards and ghats into live locations from the Ramayana. It's been performed continuously for more than 200 years and is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
It begins on Anant Chaturdashi and continues for one full month, depicting the complete Ramayana across its 31 nights. Since Anant Chaturdashi falls on a different date each year on the lunar calendar, message us for this year's exact dates.

Yes, you're welcome to capture photos and video of the processions and performances. We just ask that you do so respectfully and discreetly, since this is a devotional festival for the local community, not a staged show for visitors.
Modest, comfortable clothing is appreciated, along with comfortable walking shoes since the route covers old-town lanes and open ground, much of it after dark. A flashlight or phone torch can help, though your storyteller will guide the way.
Yes. The pace is unhurried and can be adjusted for seniors or families with children. Solo travelers, especially women, often prefer having a private storyteller guide rather than navigating the crowds and lanes of the festival alone.

We had booked a boat ride for Dev Deepawali evening. Though we started a little late, it turned out to be a mesmerising evening. Decorated ghats and lit shores, the experience was awesome. The firecrackers show was amazing! All throughout the guide was helpful and informative.
Had a beautiful boat ride on Dev Deepawali eve with Varanasi Guru. The team was super warm and made everything feel easy and welcoming. We reached out to Varanasi Guru and connected with Saurabh for help planning our short trip. His recommendations were spot-on, especially the early morning Subah-e-Banaras experience. The guided boat ride and temple visits were perfectly timed and smoothly executed. Truly a hassle-free way to explore this soulful city.
Had a great experience with Varanasi Guru for our Ganga boat ride. Everything was easy from the start - the booking was quick, they reached the pickup spot on time, and the boat was clean and comfortable. We got to see the aarti from the river, which looked beautiful.
Booked the boat ride for a quick girls' trip and it was such a vibe. The staff was nice, didn't make us feel awkward or anything. They suggested a better timing too, which honestly helped with the crowd. Ride was smooth and the views were just beautiful.
It was a wonderful experience - my friends were going to Kashi during the Mahakumbha time and we were really anticipating a boat ride. We contacted Varanasi Guru and it was so good. They not only told us the situation there, they made sure we get the experience. Surely choosing Varanasi Guru every time we are in Kashi.
