Dinner at Bharatendu Bhawan — Kashi Luxe
KASHI LUXE · BHARATENDU BHAWAN

Dinner at the
Writer's House

Bharatendu Bhawan, Thatheri Bazar, Varanasi

Not a restaurant. Not an event. A meal at the home where modern Hindi literature was born — cooked as it would have been for any guest who walked through this door.

BHARATENDU HARISHCHANDRA

"Nijbhasha unnati ahae, sab unnati ko mool" —
The rise of one's own language is the root of all progress

Bharatendu
Harishchandra

Father of Modern Hindi Literature · Playwright · Poet · Editor · Reformer

He lived for just 34 years. In that time, he changed the language of an entire nation.

Born in this very house in Varanasi in 1850, Bharatendu Harishchandra gave Hindi its modern form — moving it away from Braj Bhasha and Sanskrit-heavy prose into something people could actually read, speak, and feel. He founded literary journals, wrote plays that critiqued colonial rule through wit and satire, and gathered around him a movement that would come to be known as the Bharatendu Yug — the Bharatendu Era.

This house was never just a home. It was a gathering place. Poets, playwrights, journalists, scholars — they all came here. They ate here. They argued here. They wrote here. The rooms carry the weight of those conversations.

When you sit down to eat at Bharatendu Bhawan, you are sitting in the same rooms where the shape of modern Hindi was decided.

THE FOOD

Ghar ka khana.
Nothing more. Nothing less.

This is Banarasi home food — the kind cooked in households like this one for generations. No chef, no presentation. Just food made with care, served with warmth.

अरहर की दाल ARHAR KI DAL

Slow-cooked toor dal with a tempering of hing, zeera, and dried red chilli. The kind that simmers for hours and fills the whole house with its smell.

बाटी चोखा BAATI CHOKKHA

Wood-fired wheat dough balls with a mash of roasted brinjal, tomato, and potato — the signature dish of this region, made as it has been for centuries.

शाक-सब्ज़ी SEASONAL SABZI

Whatever the season brings. Lauki, tindora, arbi, palak — cooked simply with mustard oil and whole spices. No cream. No garnish. Just vegetables done right.

चावल और रोटी CHAWAL AUR ROTI

Hand-rolled rotis off a tawa, and plain steamed rice. The foundations. Everything else is built around these.

कढ़ी पकौड़ा KADHI PAKODA

Besan pakodas dunked in a tangy yoghurt kadhi — a Banarasi household staple that no restaurant version has ever quite captured.

मिठाई MITHAI

Something sweet from the neighbourhood — kheer, halwa, or whatever the household has made that day. Served without announcement, as it always is.

The menu changes with the season and the household. You will eat what the family cooks. Tell us your dietary needs when you enquire — everything can be accommodated.

HOW THE EVENING GOES

No itinerary.
Just the house, the food, and the conversation.

This is not a tour. It is not a demonstration. It is an evening spent in a home that carries the weight of literary history — where the conversation is the thing.

7:00 PM

Walking In

Saurabh walks you to the house. Not a monument — a home. You enter through the same door that scholars and poets entered for decades. The house is lived in. It smells of the kitchen already.

7:15 PM

Chai and the Rooms

You sit. Chai comes. The host walks you through the rooms — not as a guide, but as someone who knows the stories. You learn what happened here. What was written here. Who argued in this very room.

8:00 PM

Dinner

You eat together. No separate table, no service sequence. The food arrives as it does in any home — when it is ready. Conversation continues. The host eats with you, or sits with you. This is the point.

9:15 PM

After the Meal

The food is finished but no one is rushing you out. More chai, or something cold. Talk of Bharatendu, of Kashi's literary culture, of the Hindi writers who came after him — Premchand, Mahadevi Verma, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. Or talk of whatever you came wanting to talk about.
